So you've decided to explore coaching—now what? Understanding how coaching works and how to find the right coach is key to getting the most value from the experience.

What Happens During a Coaching Engagement?

Most coaching relationships follow a structured process:

  1. Kickoff Session - Establishing expectations around confidentiality, goals, and logistics.

  2. Assessment Phase - You may complete tools like 360° feedback, values exercises, or leadership self-assessments.

  3. Ongoing Sessions - Typically every two to four weeks, sessions focus on reflection, problem-solving, and goal alignment.

  4. Accountability & Tools - Coaches may provide templates, frameworks, or leadership strategies to support your growth.

  5. Wrap-Up & Evaluation - Good coaching ends with clarity on what progress was made and how to sustain momentum.

How to Choose the Right Coach

Not every coach is a match for every leader. When searching, consider:

  • Experience in nonprofits - Ideally, they’ve walked in your shoes.

  • Coaching style - Do they ask powerful questions or lean toward offering advice?

  • Fit - Do you feel safe being honest with them?

Interview a few coaches and ask:

  • How do you typically work with nonprofit leaders?

  • What happens between sessions?

  • What success stories can you share?

Also, don’t overlook your network. Ask trusted peers, funders, or associations for referrals. Many great coaches build their business by word of mouth.

Final Thoughts

Executive coaching is not about fixing broken leaders. It’s about unlocking the next level for capable, mission-driven professionals who want to lead with confidence and clarity. With the right partner, coaching can transform not just your leadership—but your organization’s future.
